The Sunstone Energy Transition Score (SETS) Leaderboard works like a live report card. It uses real data, such as solar and wind growth, to separate leaders from those still dependent on fossil fuels.
Each country receives an annual score based on historical energy data, reflecting both effort and real capacity to move towards carbon neutrality. The data are self-reported and drawn from established public sources.
The tool is customisable, allowing users to adjust indicators and see how different priorities shape the results.
How it works
The score evaluates progress across four key categories:
- Greenhouse Gas Emissions
- Clean Electricity Capacity
- Fossil Fuel Production
- Infrastructure & Innovation
A defining feature is its focus on fossil fuel production rather than consumption. This avoids double-counting emissions and holds carbon-exporting countries accountable for their role in the global energy system.
The ranking is based solely on measurable, comparable data, such as total electricity production and per-capita emissions. We avoid subjective assessments and rely only on verifiable metrics.
The index is updated annually and focuses strictly on carbon neutrality, excluding political systems and governance. All data, formulas, and calculations are open source.
You can disagree with our weighting
Sunstone Institute has assigned a weight to each of the four categories when calculating the score. The rationale for this weighting is provided in the methodology report.
In the dashboard below, users can adjust the weighting of each parameter to explore how different assumptions affect the results. If you do so, the results will not any longer reflect the Sunstone Institute's score.
